EVERGREEN Q&A

Evergreens are helpful to anyone wanting to set beautiful boundaries such as a property line, or screen a neighbor, or hush that busy road noise. These year round oxygen generators can also help save energy by blocking heat from the sun and wind in the cold.  In addition, Evergreen trees are low maintenance and will provide homes and shelters for birds and adding wildlife television to your backyard.

Evergreens are a great choice in providing year-round greenery, privacy, and a habitat for wildlife but keep in mind evergreens by nature prefer a moist, well-drained soil. Be conscious of the soil type in the preferred installation location and make any adjustments necessary to insure a healthy start.

Planting evergreens in the Spring or Early Fall are the preferred times for these installations. Summer is a last resort as the plant struggles to fight off the heat and potential drought while simultaneously dealing with transplant shock. Winter dieback is common in colder climates with newly planted evergreens that have not become well-established.

Too deep will allow water to pool and collect around the ball and roots and cause root rot.  Too shallow will expose the root system, not retain enough moisture and the tree can dry out in the hot sun or freeze in a cold winter.

Evergreens by nature prefer a moist, well-drained and loose type of soil that also retains water. If the soil is sandy adding compost will help retain moisture. If the soil is heavy clay, adding shredded leaves, or peat moss will improve drainage.
